The "Disappointment" Syndrome

Dov, 25· Baltimore

"My older brother is the star of our community in Baltimore. He sits in a prestigious kollel, writes articles, his name is well known, and he was matched with the daughter of a very wealthy man. My father expected me to follow in the same footsteps. But I'm different. I love practical work, I completed courses in logistics, and I work as a manager at a transportation company. I earn my own living, I keep all the mitzvot, I pray three times a day.

But in the shidduch market I feel like an unloved stepson. My own father looks disappointed while filling out my profile. The shadchanim treat me as an afterthought: 'Well, Dov here is a working guy, don't expect deep learning from him, so we'll look for a simpler kind of bride for him too.' At family gatherings, all the conversations revolve around my brother's spiritual achievements, while my successes in business are seen as some necessary secular evil. That dismissive look burns me from the inside. I want to build an honest, solid home where my work will be respected, but the system keeps judging me on a scale I never wanted to fit into in the first place."
